Oh, so that's why we have manholes...

Originally, the sand was for the roads so we wouldn't slide in our vehicles.  Now it's being used so 1) we have roads, and 2) so that we don't need to use boats to get around camp.

They took the boats out of the lake for the winter.  Unfortunately, winter and the lake found the boats and were reunited after a few short weeks.
